Chapter Eleven

Graham sat in the passenger seat of Will’s SUV into a long drive. They passed dilapidated trailers and ramshackle houses, and Graham was struck by the poverty he was witnessing. It reminded him of the omega’s neighborhoods he’d seen. Declan was working feverishly to give the omegas new homes and a better life.

If only the residents of the rez had someone looking out for them as well. If Mattheu’s theory was true, then those who truly needed the help wouldn’t be getting it.

Will pulled up to a massive iron gate. Before the gate sat a call box, which Will pressed.

“Who is it?”

“Deputy Collins, here to see Councilman Strong Elk. I bring news of the sheriff.”

A pause hung in the air. “Come right in, deputy.”

The gates began to open, and Will drove through.

“Omitted the fact I was here, hmm?” Graham asked.

Will glanced his way a moment. “I thought it best.”

Graham grinned and watched as a palatial house came into view—a few miles from utter poverty. The large stone structure was out of place and showed a complete disregard for the suffering outside the fence surrounding the home.

Will stopped the vehicle between the massive double doors and the trickling fountain. Graham exited and looked down to the expensive tiled drive, shaking his head.

“Chau won’t be happy when he learns why we’re really here,” Willibi said, glancing around. “You’d best ask what you want to know as quickly as possible as I suspect we’ll be escorted out.”

Graham followed Will’s stare and saw two large Native American men, both of them strapped. “What’s he need that kind of muscle for?”

“Good question,” Will said before heading up the short row of steps leading to the door.

Another man welcomed them inside. Graham looked about the large foyer, noting the extravagance of the exterior was no match for the interior. They were escorted into a large book-lined office where a large, older man sat behind a massive desk. He rose as they entered, his smiling countenance shifting some as he met Graham’s stare.

His smile was quick to return, though. He extended a hand to Graham. “The sheriff of Bear mountain, if I am correct? I’m Chau Strong Elk.”

“Graham,” he said as he shook the man’s hand. He didn’t wait for an invitation to sit down in one of the expensive looking leather chairs.

“Have a seat, Willibi,” Chau said, his face tight.

Will sat beside Graham and faced the councilman, his body tense.

“I understand you have news about Mattheu?” the councilman asked of Will.

“He was shot,” Graham said, observing Chau’s face as the news hit. “By an arrow.”

The surprise that showed up just a bit too late was more than likely fake. “Shot? Is he alive?”

“Thanks to our medical team, he made it through and is recovering very well,” Graham answered. “I’m investigating the crime.”

“And this happened in your county, Sheriff?”

Graham knew the answer would likely get him kicked out all the sooner. “Where were you the afternoon of the fifth?”

The councilman’s eyes widened. “You think I had something to do with this?”

“Seems you might have a reason to silence him,” Graham replied.
